Macfie Hall, Heriot

Heriot is a small community in the lowland Moorfoot hills, twenty miles south of Edinburgh. It’s village hall sits in a valley with an tranquil view from its west side. Taking inspiration from nearby Borthwick Castle, the remodelling and extension of the hall seeks to evoke similar qualities of pocket-like spaces, especially in its section, as if carved from a solid form.

Two new smaller scale pitched roof forms are slid alongside the main hall; one functions as the primary block for services such as toilets and kitchen, the other as a multi-purpose room that can work either as a separate room from the hall or as a foyer that extends the the hall function to meet the view to the west.

This commission was won through design competition and is awaiting funding award.
