OCA Studio have been working with local charity Space to Grow Moffat to convert this former free church building into creative workspaces for community use.
The proposals include the construction of a new single-storey extension which helps to form a welcoming and sheltered external courtyard, enlivening the reinstated main entrance. The steeple was removed and former entrance infilled when the church was deconsecrated in the late 19th century, and it is proposed to crown the remaining base with a new scalloped lantern, subtly referencing the arched window details of the existing building without appearing overtly ecclesiastical.
A programme of repairs and enhancements to the existing fabric will both conserve the existing church building while simultaneously ensuring its suitability for its new function. The existing masonry building will house larger workshop units on the ground floor alongside a community meeting room and facilities, while the first floor will host an open-plan community co-working space.
External landscaping works will enhance the existing public access route to the east of the building, and provide new linkages with the community allotments to the south-west.
